Katie D. shares her ‘Earth Day Resolution’

Written by Michelle Kitson on Monday, 07 May 2012.

katievid

You may remember when we featured Katie D. and her family on our blog back in December in “A personal struggle with climate change.” She talked about how her family was able to power their home and their car with their rooftop solar panels. Back then, she said, “I never go to gas stations anymore. I’ve stopped giving oil companies my money. I feel a bit like a junkie who’s finally starting to kick her addiction.” We’re proud of Katie and her family – they are the perfect example of Santa Barbarans who are powering the clean energy movement.

During CEC’s Earth Day Festival, we asked festival goers to make an “Earth Day Resolution” – like a New Year’s Resolution, but focused on how to make a difference for the environment. Katie has already done so much to lessen her environmental impact, so we were curious what her resolution could be. This year, she said “My Earth Day Resolution is to share my story about how it is possible to actually save money and be carbon neutral at the same time. You can always do more, and we all have to do that because it’s not up to one person.”

She decided the best way for her to share her story was through video. She created the video below to share her calculations for the payoff of an electric vehicle powered by solar panels. Over a 10 year period, her family will save $15,125! That’s not to mention the environmental benefit. Fueling her car will emit 0 pounds of carbon dioxide, whereas a fossil fuel car would emit 114,500 pounds over 10 years.

We are proud to report 35,765 people attended Santa Barbara Earth Day this year! (And thanks to our stellar volunteers, who tracked entries from 6 locations). It's a beautiful thing when so many people can gather to share information, celebrate, and empower one another. Check out our "Live" site to re-live the magic: live.sbearthday.org

Our favorite stats

  • 923 people took a test drive in one of the new electric vehicles in the Green Car Show. Thanks to the teams from Chevy Volt, Coda, Ford Focus, Nissan Leaf, and Toyota Prius for making this possible.
  • We counted about 1,500 bikes at the festival. 850 took advantage of free valet bike parking in Bike World. Still more came by foot or bus. Special thanks to our partners at the SB Bicycle Coalition, MTD, and Santa Barbara Car Free.
  • The amount of water distributed by our water stations this year was equivalent to 2,000 plastic bottles.
  • 85% of the waste generated by the festival was diverted from the landfill. Special thanks to Green Project Consultants for hand sorting each piece.

Special thanks

A huge thank you to our core production and marketing partners: +One Events, LoaTree, New Noise, and Oniracom, as well as dozens of other production partners and hundreds of volunteers. We invite you to join us in applauding their incredible energy and commitment.

The history of CEC's Earth Day in Santa Barbara

Written by Sigrid Wright on Wednesday, 21 March 2012.

history

"What I love about Earth Day today is that it has become an enormous exchange of information and ideas about how to preserve, protect and enhance the quality of life in Santa Barbara and by extension, the world. It's fun, educational and an aesthetic experience all rolled into one. How many events do you go to where 38,000 people gather to learn from one another? Earth Day gives me a sense of joy and hope each and every year."

- Paul Relis, former CEC Executive Director

The oil spill

To understand how Santa Barbara became the home of the one of the most highly attended, most consistently held community-based Earth Day festivals on the West Coast, one needs to go back to first Earth Day celebration in 1970.

Or rather, a year before that -- because the story of this annual celebration actually started with a tragedy. On January 28, 1969, an oil platform six miles off of Santa Barbara's coast ruptured, sending 80,000 to 100,000 barrels of crude oil into the Santa Barbara Channel over the next 10 days. The oil spread from Goleta to Ventura, killing thousands of sea birds, as well as dolphins, elephant seals, and sea lions.

"It's hard to imagine today, but at the time it was the largest oil spill in the U.S.," said Marc McGinnes, retired UCSB Environmental Studies Program professor. (Today the Santa Barbara spill ranks third behind the Deepwater Horizon spill in the Gulf in 2010 and the Exxon Valdez spill in 1989.) "What we now know as the environmental movement was just emerging. It was events like this and fires burning on the Cuyahoga River that got people's attention."

Environmental activism

Over the next few years, the Nixon Administration would respond by putting into place the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and national legislation. Locally, on the first anniversary of the oil spill, activists hosted a national conference at Santa Barbara City College, with speakers that included notable environmentalists Paul Ehrlich and David Brower, political leaders Sen. Alan Cranston, Rep. Pete McCloskey and former Interior Secretary Stewart Udall, as well as Denis Hayes, coordinator of the first Earth Day observances planned for later that year.

The ripples of that conference – in which the community began to channel its outrage, concern, and hopes for a better future – can still be felt today. One of these was the formation of the Community Environmental Council (CEC), whose first order of business was to open an ecology center on the corner of State and Anapamu, close down the street out front, and host one of the first Earth Day celebrations in the country on April 22, 1970.

The Earth Day Festival was born

"The festival itself was modest, with maybe 5,000 people. But when taken collectively, it turned out to be the world's largest event – cities everywhere participated that day," said former CEC Executive Director Paul Relis, who co-directed the organization in its early years with former Santa Barbara mayor Hal Conklin.

The annual event continued on and off thru the 1970s, waned in the 1980s, and then was revitalized in 1990 when Denis Hayes called for a recommitment to a national day of recognition for the environment. Karen Feeney led an effort to re-spark the gathering with a 20th anniversary bash at Santa Barbara City College, and Earth Day has been held consistently and with increasing attendance by the CEC since then.

Today's Earth Day Festival

Today the Earth Day Festival is a two-day event at Alameda Park, with more than 250 local and national exhibitors, a Green Car Show, live music, and speakers that have recently included director James Cameron, actress Daryl Hannah, and Tesla Motorcars CEO Elon Musk. With more that 38,000 people attending in 2011, it logs as the most well-attended annual Earth Day Festival on the West Coast.

Social media + Earth Day = “Like”

Written by Michelle Kitson on Thursday, 16 February 2012.

socialmedia

In the last month, we have seen social media help change the course of the Keystone XL pipeline and SOPA/PIPA legislation in Congress.

No matter how you feel about these issues, the power of social media influence is undeniable. Together, we’re capable making a significant difference by leveraging our networks. Imagine what could happen if we applied that energy to local environment issues.

Wouldn’t it be fantastic to see a huge out-pouring of support at CEC’s Earth Day Festival in Santa Barbara? Nearly 40,000 people came to the festival last year. If only half of those people made a resolution to do something for the Earth - like bike to work once a week, shop locally for produce, or carry a reusable water bottle – that’s 20,000 people collectively powering the clean energy movement. That’s the type of action we need to move our region off fossil fuels.

We know that CEC’s Earth Day Festival can change the course of our energy future, especially with the help of social media. YOU can be a part of that.

In preparation for Earth Day, CEC wants to help give you the tools to magnify your impact on social media. Attend our Social Media Bootcamp to learn all the ins and outs of Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and more. Bring your questions and learn from our coaches.

The Community Environmental Council (CEC) is a small and dedicated non-profit with a very big mission: ending the Santa Barbara region’s dependence on fossil fuels in one generation. It's been a busy year for CEC. After all, moving our region off fossil fuels is no small task. Check out this infographic of our most impressive accomplishments from 2011.

Thank you to everyone who helped us this year: donors, green-minded businesses, Solarize SB participants, Facebook fans, Earth Day attendees...  you all help power the clean energy movement in Santa Barbara. Consider giving back by making a donation to CEC this year.

Paul decided to go solar

on Friday, 20 May 2011.

solarize-table

"I learned a lot at Earth Day – everything from discovering the Solarize SB program, to meeting local solar installers, to information on incentives.

Personally, I'm pretty stoked to move forward with a solar installation now that my projected break-even point is 6-7 years. That’s not a bad financial return while doing the right thing for Mother Earth.”

-- Paul D., Santa Barbara resident

30 days after Earth Day, Paul D. met with a Solarize SB contractor at his home to assess it for a solar panel installation. This is what we love to see - a local resident getting inspired at Earth Day and then taking steps to make sustainable changes.

Jeff test drove an electric vehicle at the Earth Day Festival

on Friday, 20 May 2011.

jeff_leaf

"I happily participated in the Green Car Show Ride and Drive this past April and was able to drive a Nissan Leaf.  I am a Prius driver, thus knew what to look for when trying out an all-electric car.  Nissan did an excellent job making the Leaf a very 'consumer-friendly' automobile.  The Leaf was comfortable, spacious and even fun to drive.  Most importantly, I didn’t feel as though I was driving a 'golf cart'.

The CEC did a great job to provide our community with the opportunity to view and even drive a multitude of alternative vehicles in their Green Car Show. I look forward to following CEC's Plug In Santa Barbara efforts."

-- Jeff C., Santa Barbara

Jeff plans to lease an electric vehicle.

Earth Day supporter wins a slick beach cruiser

Written by Michelle Kitson on Thursday, 28 April 2011.

During Earth Day this year we launched a text donation campaign to raise money for the Earth Day Festival. Each person who texted a donation was entered into a drawing for a stylin' beach cruiser. In fact, if you were one of the 38,000 people who had a blast at the festival this year you can still text a donation to support it for next year - text "Earth" to 50555 to make a $10 donation.

Now that the Earth Day dust has settled, we randomly drew our lucky winner. Congratulations to Kelly Cote from Montecito! Not only did he support CEC with a text donation but Kelly was also one of our hard-working volunteers at Earth Day this year.

Plus, he is a student at Santa Barbara High School and loves to refill his reusable water bottle at the refilling stations there. Those refilling stations are part of a CEC project called "Rethink the Drink" which aims to reduce consumption of plastic water bottles by 75% during this school year.

Kelly is certainly doing his part - keep it up and enjoy your new cruiser!

Many thanks go out to Isla Vista Bike Boutique who generously donated a bike from their shop.

And most of all, many many thanks go out to all of you who texted a donation this year. The Earth Day Festival would certainly not be possible year after year without your support - Powered by the People!

Earth Day 2011: a success!

on Tuesday, 19 April 2011.

We are proud to report over 38,214 people attended Earth Day this year – our largest event ever! (And thanks to our stellar volunteers, who track entries from 6 locations). It’s a beautiful thing when so many people can gather peacefully to share information, celebrate, and empower one another.

Our Favorite Stats:

  • 1,130 people valet parked their bikes for free at Bike World, and more than a thousand others self-parked their bikes. Still more came by foot or bus. Specials thanks to our partners at the SB Bicycle Coalition,, MTD, and Santa Barbara Car Free
  • We finally found a way to keep everyone hydrated thanks to two Water Monsters, which take local tap water, filter it and serve it cold to anyone with a refillable bottle.  The amount of water distributed by the Water Monsters this year was equivalent to 3,200 6,000 plastic bottles (Edit: We recalculated and discovered our savings was much more than we originally thought).
  • 523 people took a ride and drive in one of the new plug-in vehicles in the Green Car Show. Thanks to the teams from Chevy Volt, Nissan Leaf, and Toyota Prius for making this possible.
  • All of the waste generated by the festival is being hand sorted by one of our major sponsors, MarBorg Industries. We will know our diversion rate at the end of the month.

‘Ride and Drive’ an electric car or hybrid at the Green Car Show

on Monday, 11 April 2011.

Experience cutting-edge technology first hand by taking an electric vehicle for a “ride and drive” at the 12th annual Green Car Show, held at the Santa Barbara Earth Day Festival. At the Green Car Show, CEC hosts the largest collection of efficient and alternative-fueled vehicles between LA and San Francisco.

This year we feature the latest electric cars and plug-in hybrid vehicles, like the Chevy Volt and the Nissan LEAF, and some are available for a test drive. We’re also showcasing vehicles that run on hydrogen, ethanol, biodiesel and compressed natural gas.

The Green Car Show helps CEC launch our new program Plug In Santa Barbara as we work to bring electric vehicle charging stations to the Central Coast and make it easier to use EVs in Santa Barbara. Get ready for plug-in electric vehicles and follow our updates on Facebook.
