Green Rides to School

Did you know that daily driving is the largest environmental choice most
people make each day?

Save time, save money, reduce congestion and help the environment

by choosing a green ride to school.

Read below to find alternative transportation information in one convenient place, it's as easy as 1-2-3.

1) Find neighbors to form school carpools using quick internet matching

Traffic Solutions, the County rideshare agency, operates a web-based rideshare matching service that has helped over 6,000 local employees search for carpool partners. Log in at the bottom of www.TrafficSolutions.info/school-pool.htm and in five minutes receive matches of neighbors with students or employees at your school. If you don’t find a match check back a week later as new users enter the system. The service uses an anonymous email, so you are in charge of contacting other parents and meeting beforehand to determine if you are comfortable having your child ride with the other parent. Try using the website for your work commute too! Any questions can be directed to Traffic Solutions at 963-SAVE.

2) Look up bus routes

Did you know that MTD offers school booster routes and subsidized bus passes for students? Visit www.sbmtd.gov/Lines/Line_19 to view routes and information and let MTD shuttle your child to and from school.

3) Find out about the South Coast’s Safe Routes to School Program

20 local organizations, coordinated by the Coalition for Sustainable Transportation (COAST), are working to enable students to walk or bike to school safely. For more information, visit
coast-santabarbara.org/safe-routes-to-school or call your school and ask for the Safe Routes to School site coordinator.

Check back soon for more information (and prizes!) for Walk to School Day on October 8, 2008 and Bike to School Day in May 2009.

The Community Environmental Council works on energy and transportation issues,
which seeks to move our regional away from fossil fuels in one generation.
