Walk & Roll

Getting to School Happy, Healthy and Green

pfcomm-walk-and-rollCEC’s Walk & Roll program — in conjunction with Traffic Solutions — educates, encourages, and makes it easier for students to use alternative transportation to get to school. As anyone who lives by a school knows, rush hour traffic revolves around the school day. Walk & Roll encourages parents and students to carpool, walk, bike or take the bus to school.

Over the years, local students have relied less on healthy, active transportation like walking and biking to school. Bussing and carpooling to school have declined. Many parents now drive two or more round trips each school day — driving that means unnecessary fuel consumption, congested streets, and kids who are less active and less healthy.

WHAT CEC IS DOING

Educating and Encouraging Parents and Students — CEC is providing information on the benefits of using alternative transportation to get to school, and tools to make it easier to use an alternative.  We also offer encouragement in the form of incentives and fun events and work with schools to increase safety. Visit www.Walk-Roll.org to learn about the project.

At Dos Pueblos High School, we are working with the traffic and safety committee to encourage more carpooling to school, as many of the students come from as far away as the Mesa and downtown Santa Barbara. At Santa Barbara High School we are working with student groups and the Santa Barbara Bicycle Coalition to encourage more bicycling to school.
