WHY DRIVING ON SUNSHINE MATTERS
Electric vehicles (EVs) and solar are a match made in heaven. An estimated 39% of California EV drivers have rooftop solar on their homes, which allows them to truly drive emissions-free.
It only takes about 2 kW of solar energy to power an EV for 12,000 miles, the average drivers travel each year. Depending on the size of your at-home energy needs, purchasing solar panels might cost approximately $7,000 after incentives. This one-time investment gives an EV owner a fuel station on their home that will produce fuel for more than 25 years. In that same 25 years, driving 12,000 miles per year would cost over $50,000.
WHAT CEC IS DOING
Solarizing the Central Coast
We are making home solar power ownership easier through CEC’s Solarize Programs and bringing solar technology into the public sphere via public events like our Solarize Homeowner Workshops.
Building new charging stations
The Central Coast now has over 360 public charging stations, and CEC is working with local cities and businesses to install new charging stations at ideal locations. While most charging is done overnight at home, a public charging network allows EV drivers to top off and drive more electric miles. Please contact us if you are interested in charging stations at your business.
Getting local government on board
CEC has worked with Southern California Edison to introduce government officials and community leaders to the challenges and opportunities our region will face as drivers begin to transition toward electric vehicles. We are now working to develop an EV Readiness Plan for the Central Coast.
Making buildings plug-in ready
We are working with city planners, builders and architects to pre-wire new construction and major renovations so that buildings are “plug-in ready.”
