Community Environmental Council (CEC) is a Santa Barbara-based non-profit
organization with a reputation for positive social change and community

CEC’s Solarize Program makes it easier for homeowners to go solar. The program
offers vetted installers, discounted prices, and educational workshops. Solarize has
helped over 730 homeowners adopt renewable energy.

Our Ideal Candidates Are:

  • Passionate about CEC’s mission and programs, and eager to learn about solar, energy efficiency, and sustainable transportation – particularly zero emission vehicles
  • Able to take initiative under general supervision, assume responsibility, prioritize, and resolve problems/li>
  • Strong communicators, both written and verbal, with an enthusiasm for social media and content development/li>
  • Able to provide outstanding customer service and work cooperatively with a diverse array of stakeholders/li>

Intern Functions & Responsibilities

  • Become knowledgeable about solar:

    • Learn about residential solar technologies
    • Become comfortable with discussing: Energy units (watts/kW/MW), utility billing of solar customers (net energy metering (NEM), time-of-use pricing, etc.), power purchase agreements, escalator rates, string inverters, microinverters, warrantees, ground mount, roof mounts, etc.
  • Assist with the marketing, scheduling, planning and execution of Solarize and CEC events including program launches, homeowner workshops and educational presentations:

    • Research, schedule and book venues for Solarize workshops
    • Research advertising/outreach opportunities for Solarize programs
    • Place notices in newspaper calendars for Solarize workshops and other CEC events
    • Coordinate advertisement development as needed for the Solarize program
    • Coordinate zero-emission vehicle test-drive events and car shows
    • Support education and outreach at CEC events
  • Solarize Customer Support:

    • Call Solarize leads, collect data, and input data using Salesforce as a lead
      management tool, and google sheets as a tracking tool
    • Provide solar education and guide customers through the Solarize process
  • Attend Solarize Workshops:

    • Attend about two evening workshops each month, to
      learn the program details, become comfortable with solar basics, and eventually
      lead portions of the workshops.
  • Maintain Solarize materials and website:

    • On a weekly basis, check to make sure
      that the Solarize websites reflect current workshop offerings, and that the handouts
      and flyers also reflect up to date information.
  • Draft content for CEC publications, blogs, posts and press releases:

    • Interview prior Solarize customers to develop case studies/testimonials from
      satisfied customers that we can share on the website
    • Develop blog and social media posts to highlight Energy Program activities and
      events
    • Support the development and editing of reports, publications, and press releases
  • Providing research and administrative support as needed:

    • Research and track various energy and environmental policy matters at the local,
      state, and national level
    • Track progress toward program goals and provide information for reports
    • Attend and assist with community outreach events on occasion

Job status:

Forecasted hours: 8-9 hrs/wk, based out of CEC’s office in downtown
Santa Barbara. Reports to Energy Program staff. Preferred start date of ~May 6,
2019, preferred schedule of two afternoon/evenings per week.

Compensation & Benefits:

$12/hour, no benefits

April Price joined CEC as an Energy Associate in 2015 to work with the Solarize programs. April holds a Master's Degree in Environmental Science and Management with a specialization in Economics and Politics of the Environment from the Bren School at University of California, Santa Barbara. She also holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology from UC Santa Cruz. April has a background in environmental education and volunteer management.
