League of Women Voters Forum: Santa Barbara / South Coast Housing 2030
March 17 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
League of Women Voters of Santa Barbara (LWVSB) presents a Community Forum to understand housing options in the south coast of Santa Barbara. Just as the earthquake of 1925 led to a rebirth of the City of Santa Barbara, we have an unprecedented opportunity to reshape the entire South County in a more equitable, healthy, economically viable and sustainable way. Ten local leaders and housing experts will provide a vision of what we want to see in 2030 and how we can begin taking steps to get there.
The problems and causes of the Santa Barbara local housing crisis will be addressed by Rob Fredericks of HASB, Frank Rodriguez from CAUSE, Kristen Miller from the Santa Barbara South Coast Chamber of Commerce and Dick Flacks, Chair of SUN (Sustainable University Now).
Housing and Planning professionals from Goleta, County, City of Santa Barbara and Carpinteria will review evolving policies encouraged by the state and cover topics of RHNA numbers, need for Countywide approach in locating future housing developments, how ADUs (accessory dwelling units) can be part of solution, livability issues of smaller units and how to create more sustainable communities.
The last segment of the forum will use ideas for a future State Street envisioned by the AIA Downtown Design Charette to discuss how to provide higher density and affordable workforce housing while minimizing negative impacts such as traffic, view blocking, out of scale massing, etc. Architect Detty Piekert will be joined by City Planner Renee Brooke and Housing Authority Commissioner Geoff Green to help identify next steps for getting planning approvals and funding to advance the vision to implementation.
State Assembly member, Steve Bennett, will share thoughts and answer questions related to his interest in affordable housing.
