The Community Environmental Council’s annual Green Gala is more than a memorable party; it’s an opportunity to hear how CEC is working to preserve Santa Barbara’s unique way of life. At this year’s gala, attendees were immersed in CEC’s vision to build a grass-roots movement that embraces both personal action and government accountability to create a resilient, green future worthy of the next generation.
This year’s Green Gala combined ‘pop-up theater’ with substantive discussion about our mission while 250 guests ate a delicious meal in a beautiful setting at The Lark in the Funk Zone. The menu featured seasonal, local, New American cuisine and artisanal local spirits. The décor featured repurposed and recycled material, including items from the incredible vaults of the award-winning Merryl Brown Events, Creative Consultant for this year’s event. As always, the Green Gala drew on the incredible support of the community for donated services and products to create a party worth remembering.
We are grateful to everyone who attended the event and to those who donated their time, effort and resources. It was a beautiful night and we couldn’t have done it without you!

Green Gala 2013 Photos
An award-winning green event
CEC's Green Gala is known for highlighting local food and beverages and the 2013 event will be no exception. Typically, up to 97% of our waste is diverted from the landfill (and yes, we sort and weigh every item, thanks to Green Project Consultants).
Most of the total waste generated by past Green Galas was recycled or composted. These numbers far exceed waste management practices of any standard event and are exemplary even for an event striving to be considered “zero waste.” The remaining small percentage of trash resulted in large part out of the necessity to package delivered food.
CEC’s Green Galas in 2010, 2011 and 2012 were produced by the talented team at Merryl Brown Events, winner of the International Special Events Society (ISES) Esprit Awards for “Best Green Solution” for CEC's 2010 and 2011 Green Galas - her third year in a row to be nominated for this prestigious award. She also won the BizBash West award for Social Planner of the Year and was a finalist for "Best Green Initiative." We are excited to continue working with Merryl and her team in 2013.
