HOW YOU CAN TAKE ACTION
- Put off non-essential business travel and replace 10 percent of your meetings and/or work days with teleconferencing.
- Commit to commuting by biking, walking, taking transit, and carpooling on other days. Start with a one day a week commitment and you might enjoy it enough to make sustainable transportation a daily or weekly practice. Traffic Solutions’ SmartRide can help. Set up a school carpool or teach your older kids to ride the bus. Bike or try an electric bike for a non-commute trip. Start with biking to the gym, to the beach, or an easy place you might otherwise drive.
- Does your family have a car that doesn’t get used much? Try carsharing or ridesharing, which may save you the expense of the extra car while still allowing access to wheels when you need them – Zipcar is on the Central Coast, as well as Lyft and Uber.
WHY DRIVE LESS MATTERS
Transportation currently accounts for nearly half of the greenhouse gas emissions in California. Choosing to drive less and take alternate modes of transport will help create the community we want to live in – one centered on people, not cars.
WHAT CEC IS DOING
As part of its mission to move our region off fossil fuels, CEC advocates for people-focused transportation solutions like pedestrian trails, bike lanes, and rideshare programs that create cheaper, safer commutes, vibrant neighborhoods, and healthy families.
Here are some of the specific actions CEC is taking that you can act on too.
CEC plays a major role in long-term sustainable community planning by encouraging civic engagement in government planning such as the Bike Master Plan, the Regional Transportation Plan, the County’s Climate Action Strategy, and the City of Santa Barbara’s general plan update.
